Reading Endorsement - Competency 2: Application of Research-Based Instructional Practices

In this course teachers will scaffold student learning by applying the principles of research-based reading instruction and integrating the six components of reading. Teachers will engage in the systematic problem solving process: use data to accurately identify problems, analyze those problems, design and implement interventions, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and intensify instruction based on individual student needs.

The strategy I will be choosing is the Teacher Read Aloud . I have done many of these throughout the year, especially during the holidays. Wednesday, the day of our Thanksgiving feast, we will be doing one. We will also be sharing it on Tuesday with our Reading Class.

Some of the things I have and will incorporate are:
Reading the text before you share it with your class to make sure it's appropriate for your students.
Reserve a minimum 5 to 10 minutes for a read aloud.
Be dramatic, (Both Mrs. Nieves and Students are good at that) enjoy hearing readers adopt the voices of different characters. Remember, you're modeling good read-aloud techniques.
Share books you love, and you'll transmit enthusiasm for reading to students.
Select a variety of literay genres and authors throughout the year.
After completing a read-aloud, make the book available to students. Many will want to reread sections, look at photographs or illustrations, or reread the entire book.
    Happy Sunday!!

  2. The strategy I used in class was a think aloud. My students were given a prompt asking them to think about and analyze the practice of the United States president pardoning a turkey for Thanksgiving. After allowing students a ten minute period I started to go into the process of thinking about and explaining how and why this practice of pardoning a turkey started. Then we discussed their thought process and the answers came up with for the prompt.

  3. in my class we use a category map. Usually it will be to define terms in a text we are unfamiliar with. We were listening to two country songs relating to the American Dream so that's what they created charts about.
